My top inspiration for romantic proposal ideas that won't break the bank...

I’m a celebrant – it’s no surprise that I love LOVE, and nothing warms the cockles of my heart better than a beautiful proposal story. Of course, proposals don’t have to happen on Valentine’s day, but there’s something undeniably magical about the love in the air.

My own proposal happened in Edinburgh, early morning on a cold March day in a courtyard outside the writers museum. The only person about was a guy who may or may not have slept there all night, and he gave us the loudest and most heartfelt cheer of congratulations I’ve ever heard. I wanted to take him for breakfast, but he disappeared whilst I was still coming to terms with the beauty of what I’d just agreed to! We still tell that story, 9 years on.

There’s often a pressure to pull off the perfect proposal and that’s after you’ve got to grips with the ultimate engagement question – ring first, or not? But a beautiful proposal doesn’t have to happen at the perfect sunset spot overlooking the ocean, or with the help of a flash mob. The perfect proposal is one which feels right. There is no right or wrong way, and it doesn’t have to be Insta-perfect. You can grab those pictures when you’ve said ‘yes’.

Here are my top 7 ideas for the perfect proposal, which, most importantly won’t break the bank! Add your own in the comments, or steal as much inspiration from these ideas as you like!

Embrace your geek!

Take inspiration from this woman who proposed to her husband using their shared love of Mario as the hook. Mario, D&D, Stranger Things, Starwars, it doesn’t matter – find your shared geekdom and ask them to join you in a life of shared geeky love! Treasure hunt proposal:

Send your love on a treasure hunt. Your town, your favourite place, even your own home. When they get to the end, hopefully the answer is yes! Scale up or down as you like, or even consider getting a company such as www.treasuretrails.co.uk to customise one for you.

Photoshoot proposal:

The ultimate way to capture the moment. Arrange a couples photoshoot with a lovely photographer of your choice (I can recommend a few if you’re local to Cheshire), let them know what you’re planning and pop the question mid shoot. What a beautiful way to capture that moment!

Low key Pizza and PJs proposal:

One of the sweetest proposals I ever heard was a guy who made a YouTube video, outlining all the reasons why he loved his partner, and all the reasons why they should marry him. He suggested a night of PJs and pizza and TV binging. The ring stashed ready inside his pocket, YouTube on the TV screen he played the video.

Involve the furry ones:

Nobody can resist those furry faces after all! A sign round their neck, a doggy tee shirt, printed on their favourite fetch toy, the possibilities are endless…

Love actually flash cards:

Lets gloss over the background of why Mark is on Juliette’s doorstep with these cards! The beautiful Love Actually flashcard scene has been inspiration for years – make your own, choose your spot and let your written words do the talking… Love Actually | Cards on the Doorstep - YouTube
